Canada's plan to follow its April 54-cent cut in exported gas price for utilities with an additional cut to $3.30 per thousand cubic feet (mcf) will have the greatest impact on California and Pacific Northwest users. Northwest Pipeline, which currently imports 42% from Canada, assumes that the price cut is aimed at attracting a larger market share. Others question whether the second cut will occur because of internal political pressure between western energy developers who want higher prices and the Ottawa government. Both the US and Canadian governments see the first price cut as a token gesture since Canadian gas accounts for only 4% of the US market. (DCK)
