We compiled available data on annual loadings of heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon to the northwest Atlantic Ocean from the St. Lawrence to Chesapeake Bay from all major rivers and watersheds. Not surprisingly, loadings vary greatly among watersheds but are in all cases much higher than would be expected from an undisturbed landscape. Patterns in nutrient and pollutant loadings are not simply explained on the basis of human population, watershed area, or river discharge. Understanding the controls on these loadings requires an in depth analysis of how humans interact with the landscape.
