Efficient promotion of utility products and services is best achieved by a commitment to customer-focused, market-driven strategies. EPRI`s CLASSIFY System provides utilities with the information, methods, and tools necessary to develop an in-depth understanding of customer attitudes toward electrotechnologies and their applications. This guide presents an overview of Residential CLASSIFY, a needs-defined customer research and target marketing framework, focusing on energy lifestyle, HVAC, lighting, and water heating needs. Specifically, the guide identifies 11 residential energy lifestyle needs and groups customers into eight target markets according to their needs. Each CLASSIFY-Profile lists in order of priority the 11 energy lifestyle factors and 24 additional technology-related factors that influence customer purchases of end-use technologies. The guide also describes how to use customer needs information to develop and deploy customer-driven products, programs and services. The appendix provides succinct demographic descriptions for each Residential CLASSIFY profile. Future CLASSIFY-Profile reports will present customer needs information for the commercial and industrial sectors.
