Enzymes and isoenzymes in pathogenesis and diagnosis
This book, based on 19 review articles discusses how enzymes and isoenzymes can be used in diagnosis, and the role they play in the pathogenesis of disease. The opening reports concentrate on the digestive system. Topics covered are advances in the diagnostic use of alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes, enzymes of value in pancreatic disease, and the modulation by steroids of gamma-glutamyltransferase in fetal hepatocytes. Advances are described such as the multiplicity of enzyme defects at the root of common inherited metabolic diseases. Newer applications of enzymology are shown, as in the role of purine-related enzymes in leukemia and immunodeficiency states. The role of enzymes in metabolic abnormalities such as oxylate formation, disorders of peroxisomal metabolism, hyperphenylalaninemia, and methemoglobinemia is explored.
