Distillate production of a simple direct solar still
- McCracken Solar Co., Alturas, CA (USA)
The direct solar energy still discussed here is the product of lessons learned through hundreds of successful installations and shows a favorable optimization of the requirements of performance and cost. Typical annual average production in a wide range of climates in tropical and lower mid-latitude regions is projected to fall in a range of 4 to 6 liters per square meter per day (L/m{sup 2}/day). Figures show an array of standard, manufactured solar stills that have been in test operation for almost a year. Comparisons are presented between the older one, and the current model with cross-section drawings of the two. The author presents information on siting, design choices, and methods of predicting performance of his current model. 4 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.
