In 1982 Texaco's Los Angeles Refinery began a plant-wide project to upgrade the existing pneumatic and discrete electronic instrumentation to Distributed Digital Control. This project was in turn part of a larger corporate emphasis on instrument modernization. The first unit chosen for upgrading was the Delayed Coking Unit, a choice made not on the basis of age but because the unit suffered the poorest quality of control of any of the refinery units and so became a prime candidate for both reinstrumentation and advanced computer control. This article discusses the tools and the methods used in this advanced control project.
