On-line rapid coal analysis offers processing and marketing opportunities

The author compares two classes of instrumentation that assay one or more aspects of coal quality in bulk amounts, on-line and in real-time. They are gamma ash meters and prompt-gamma-neutron-activation analysis (PGNAA). He then reviews several applications of an on-line rapid analysis: quality assurance, sorting, blending, and plant control. Economically, he says the analysis is roughly in the same state as were personal computers in 1980. However, ten years from now, the mining community may well wonder how it ever managed without it.
