Abstract

A distinctive cutaneous eruption occurred in two patients with central nervous system tumors who were treated with broxuridine (bromodeoxyuridine) and radiotherapy. Findings included the initial appearance of papular lesions within skin directly overlying acral superficial veins and the later development of a more generalized eruption eventuating into exfoliative erythroderma.

Facilities for regional tumor hyperthermia has been in use at RPMI since 1976, and have been routinely used to treat patients according to protocol since 1977. Hyperthermia delivery has been exclusively by microwave using 434 MHz, 915 MHz and 2450 MHz. Approximately 125 patients have been treated and 70 have achieved completion of therapy and follow-up. Follow-up has been at least one month and several patients have been followed for one to two years. Phase I study of intermittent intravenous bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) with conventional fractionated irradiation

A Phase I trial of intravenous bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) and conventional fractionated radiation therapy was performed in 14 patients with glioblastoma multiforme and 7 patients with other poorly radioresponsive tumors. The BUdR was given as a constant intravenous infusion for 12 hr/day for up to 14 days. Local toxicity (within the radiation field) was minor, with 7 of the 21 patients requiring a brief treatment break for moist skin desquamation. There was no significant CNS toxicity noted clinically nor by autopsy examination. Additionally, no significant enhancement of radiation injury was noted to bowel or liver. We have reported that (/sup 111/In)T101 is highly effective in the detection of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in nodal and cutaneous (erythroderma and tumor) sites. This study compares the biodistribution of (/sup 131/I)T101 (1 to 7.1 mg, 2 mCi) in four patients with CTCL; two of these patients also received (/sup 111/In)T101 (1 mg, 5 mCi). There was rapid clearance of (/sup 131/I)T101 from whole-body, spleen, liver, and bone marrow, with evidence of loss of /sup 131/I tracer from the T101. Radiotherapy for Kaposi's sarcoma

Between 1954 and 1976, 60 patients with Kaposi's sarcoma were treated in the Department of Radiotherapy of the Lahey Clinic Foundation at the High Voltage Research Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Only 2 patients were free of clinical disease in the lower extremities at the time of initial presentation, and 40 patients (69%) had cutaneous lesions involving areas extending above the knees. Eight patients (13%) also presented with mucous membrane involvement in addition to skin disease. Twenty-one patients were treated only with megavoltage electrons during the initial course of radiotherapy, and 12 patients were treated with supervoltage photons alone.more »« less

Indications for total cutaneous electron beam radiation therapy of mycosis fungoides

From 1977 to 1984, we treated 34 patients with mycosis fungoides and 9 patients with B cutaneous lymphomas. Eighteen patients with mycosis fungoides were treated with total skin electron irradiation (TSEI) and had a minimum follow-up of 15 months (range 15 months to 7 years). The lowest electron energy of the linear accelerator was 8 MeV therefore we placed a plexiglas screen between the patient and the machine; the resulting electron energy was 4 MeV.
