Title: Environmental audits of exploration and production facilities using pen-based computers and data management systems

Abstract

Rapid collection and management of quality field data are the foundation for any environmental investigation. Recent developments in pen-computing technologies have made it possible to record field data in electronic format using field-ruggedized pen-based computers without the need for paper forms or log books. For this project, a field data entry application was constructed in Microsoft Access, a relational database management software system. The data files are collected directly into the data management systems in the field. The database management system allows for further characterization or reporting activities. Efficient collection, storage, and management improves the efficiency and overall quality of the characterization and presentation of the project data. Furthermore, the data can also be electronically transferred to other analytical software packages without the need to manually re-enter data. The electronic files can be used from the initial investigation phase through entire facilities management programs or internal client programs.
