Title: Performance characteristics of magnesium/para-nitrophenol cells in 2:1 magnesium electrolytes

Abstract

1 V/1 Ah magnesium/para-nitrophenol (PNP) reserve cells were fabricated and their performance was evaluated in different electrolytes [2M aqueous solutions of Mg(C1O[sub 4])[sub 2], MgCl[sub 2], and MgBr[sub 2]] and at various current densities. Results indicate that these cells exhibit superior performance in a MgCl[sub 2] medium. Hence, a 3 V/1 AhMg/MgCl[sub 2]/PNP battery was fabricated, and the performance was found to be identical to that of the cells. The discharge behavior is discussed in terms of electrons transferred during reduction and it is suggested that PNP is an efficient depolarizer for magnesium batteries. Cyclic voltammetry studies were also carried out in order to understand the reduction mechanism of PNP.
