Title: Listing of the 20 areas with the most severe air pollution problems among the 65 standard metropolitan statistical areas having an industrial population of 40,000 or more

Book ·
OSTI ID:5487059

Air sampling data for the 65 SMSA's considered is available from which a fairly accurate measure can be derived of the levels of particulates, sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide. However, only a very rough index of photochemical smog is available. In spite of this gap in the total pollution measurement, the importance of the information that is available on the particulates and sulfur oxides, and to a lesser extent on hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, is great enough to justify using it to compile this list. It should be noted that work is going forward in measuring photochemical smog, and the National Center for Air Pollution Control expects to have smog data on the larger SMSA's within 2 years.
