The transformation from the sulfoxides to the sulfides can be achieved by using an inexpensive common industrial hydrodesulfurization catalyst. The experimental conditions used in such experiments can be reduced to fairly mild conditions--10 atm, 70/sup 0/C, and applied to various sulfoxides. The catalyst has the following composition(wt%): CoO 2.8; MoO/sub 3/, 13.5: NiO<0.03: SiO/sub 2/, 2.8; and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, 80.9. The catalyst was sulfurized using a gas mixture of H/sub 2/S 15% and H/sub 2/ 5% by volume. The sulfoxide and the catalyst were introduced into the reactor in a dodecane or benzene solution. H/sub 2/ was introduced at 10 to 15/sup 0/ below the working temperature. Air was removed by purging with nitrogen at 5 atm. All products were analyzed by vapor-phase chromatography. They were identified by comparison with ir, /sup 1/HNMR, and /sup 13/CNMR spectra with those of authentic specimens. The kinetics are discussed. 1 table.
