Title: The New Explorers teacher`s guide: Rock and roll physics

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:527525

This New Explorers Teacher Guide has been designed to accompany the Rock and Roll Physics episode. It has been designed by a team of junior high science teachers, physics teachers and physicists to be used with junior high students. In some cases it may be useful for physics students in high school. The activities included in this Guide are focused on what physicists call Mechanics and make use of everyday experiences to assist the teaching. The field trips that are suggested at the end of the book are an adaptation of the Great America Physics Day that was started by the two stars of this episode. In the Chicago area very large numbers of physics students and their teachers converge on this amusement park and have a day of taking rides and applying physics. At the beginning of the field trip section one will find a time line and planning list which will be very valuable for the planning of a field trip to either an amusement park or a local park. The next section gives the background necessary to create a device for measuring the height of objects that one cannot approach and another type of vertical accelerometer. The background for a teacher for the field trip is included as are copies of student pages for the field trip itself. Also included in the field trip are some questions and studies that can be applied to ordinary playlots that are found all around the country. Teachers are even encouraged to have their students spend one day in a nearby playlot learning about the physics of these simpler rides before designing a field trip to a more sophisticated site. It is definitely possible to have the whole field trip be at the playlot and areas around the school. Physics is all around us and does not require difficult and expensive field trips to be effective.
