An environmental management team (EMT) is an organizational structure that can be instituted within any company. The EMT is approached from a systems engineering perspective where members representing a cross-section of a company`s engineering, manufacturing, procurement, environmental, safety, legal, management, distribution, and financial departments or divisions participate as team members. This new type of organizational structure is based upon total quality management and total environmental quality management principals. The EMT`s main focus is to develop an overall environmental strategy for the company. This strategy includes issues such as waste minimization, pollution prevention, environmental compliance, and health and safety. During the life cycle of a product or process, the EMT ensures that the associated life cycle activity of a product or program is in compliance with the company`s environmental strategy and federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations. The EMT structure also provides an opportunity for the EMT representatives` departments to assess developing and existing processes for future pollution prevention activities in the context of the departments` areas of specialty. For example, the engineering department has a different area of expertise and environmental concerns than the financial department. From the departments` assessments, an overall pollution prevention strategy can be developed and implements for the company by the EMT.
