Abstract

This report presents the design, construction, and testing of a high temperature superconducting microwave switch. The circuit is implemented in microstrip transmission line geometry and utilizes voltage and or current to create the switching action. Results of RF power limiting are also presented.

The authors report their recent efforts in designs of several RF and microwave devices using high temperature superconducting (HTS) thin film technology. Devices considered include transmission lines, resonators, switches, and phase shifters in microstrip, stripline and coplanar waveguide. The circuit design, modeling, simulation, fabrication, packaging, and testing are discussed. Using a two-dimensional (2-D) EM simulator, they have optimized the geometry of the RF microstrip and stripline resonators for frequencies near 900 MHz. A stripline gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) was constructed out of yttrium iron garnet ferrite and tested at charge voltages of 35 kV–55 kV with bias fields ranging from 10 kA/m to 20 kA/m. Typically, high power gyromagnetic NLTLs are constructed in a coaxial geometry. Chemical treatment such as buffered chemical polishing (BCP) or electro polishing (EP) followed by high pressure rinsing (HPR) of niobium (Nb) superconducting RF (SRF) cavities is expensive and complex multistep process. Furthermore, the cavity RF surfaces after the treatment still have numerous bubbles and pits that result from welding.
