The successful implementation of cogeneration stimulates the introduction of small scale units in the Netherlands. Fuel cell based systems seem to be good candidates as these promise a highly efficient and clean conversion of fossil fuels, in particular of natural gas. A successful introduction of technical and economic viable units may open the way to larger systems. Also, in the long run, fuel cells could play a key role in a sustainable, zero-CO{sub 2} society. This paper deals with the background and the present status of the Dutch fuel cell program.
