The toughness of coarse grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) and intercritically reheated CGHAZ of SQV-2A pressure vessel steel has been investigated with particular attention to the behavior of M-A constituents. The effect of temper-bead thermal cycles on the toughness improvement in ICCGHAZs and temper-bead process. The occurrence of embrittlement in CGHAZs and ICCGHAZs was accompanied by the formation of the M-A constituent. Observations with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the M-A constituent acted as an initiation site of cleavage facets or secondary cracks. Temper-bead thermal cycles could improve the toughness of ICCGHAZs due to the decomposition of M-A constituents, but the toughness improvement by the temper-bead thermal cycle was influenced strongly by the cooling time {Delta}t{sub 8/5(2)eff} of the second thermal cycle. For short cooling time {Delta}t{sub 8/5(2)eff}, namely for low welding heat-input, the toughness improvement was significant.
