Four types of sponge balls: normal, granulate, polishing and corundum were evaluated for fouling removal capabilities, polarization resistance residue and cleaning force. The sponge balls under evaluation were removed from Unit 1 of the Mihama Nuclear Power Station. It was found that the granular ball was the best, however its cleaning force decreased rapidly; the 26 mm polishing ball was better than the normal ball, and, the corundum ball must be used with caution. 2 figs.
