Photographic observation data of auroras in a winter period of the IGY were used in an analysis of the orientation of elongated auroral forms in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. A comparison of the orientation of elongated auroral forms and the disturbance vector of the geomagnetic field is made. Auroral zones for all hours of the day that characterize the distribution of nighttime auroras are discussed. (auth)
