Abstract

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) replacement hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-134a has gained an economic edge over CFC-12 in the U.S. says ICI Americas Chemicals & Plastics president Robin Gadsby. Although conversion costs are keeping many customers from making the switch. Gadsby says demand for HFC-134a should exceed global capacity in the mid-1990s. He adds that ICI can recoup its $430-million investment in HFCs.

Elf Atochem (Paris) has commissioned its 9,000-m.t./year hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-134a plant at Pierre Benite, France, although the company may not operate it at full capacity for some time because demand for the product has yet to take off. Nevertheless, the unit completes the company's three-pronged strategy for replacing ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which also includes supplying CFCs, as permitted by legislation, and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-141b and -142b, transitional substances the company says will speed replacement of CFCs.

Catalytic hydrodechlorination of CFC-114a (CF{sub 3}-CFCl{sub 2}) over palladium single crystals

As the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC`s) are being phased out, their most promising replacements are the hydrofluorocarbons (HFC`s). In particular, CFC-12 (CF{sub 2}Cl{sub 2}), widely used as a refrigerant, for example, is being replaced by HFC-134a CF{sub 3}-CFH{sub 2}. One possible route to HFC-134a is the hydrodechlorination of CFC-114a (CF{sub 3}CFCl{sub 2}) over palladium catalysts. We report results using single crystal palladium catalysts and compare the reactivity of the low Miller index planes and a polycrystalline foil. We correlate these results with parallel UHV surface science experiments. Deuterium isotope studies (D{sub 2} rather than H{sub 2}) will also be presented and discussed.more »« less
Alternatives to CFC-114 in high-temperature heat pumps: Compressor performance with HFC-236ea and HFC-236fa

The paper gives results of comprehensive calorimeter tests on a semihermetic compressor with chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-114, hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-236ea, and HFC-236fa over a wide range of temperature test conditions: evaporating temperatures from 0 to 35 C and condensing temperatures from 40 to 110 C. Parameters assessed as criteria for performance evaluation and for reliable performance include: cooling capacity; electric power input, current, and voltage; coefficients of performance; compressor volumetric and isentropic efficiencies; and discharge and oil temperatures. Polyolester oil was used as lubricant in the compressor.
Future consumption and emissions of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) alternatives to CFCs: Comparison of estimates using top-down and bottom-up approaches

Two methods of estimating the future requirements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are compared. The top-down method, in which growth in demand is factored from the global Gross National Product (GNP), and the bottom-up method, where the demand is calculated by extrapolating the historic demand for CFC-12 and HCFC-22, are shown to produce very similar results. A market in the region of 150 000 tonnes/year for the principal replacement, HFC-134a, is predicted for 1995/1996, rising to 310 000 tonnes/year in 2020/2025.
