PG and E open system communications architecture project -- Volume 1: Data communications infrastructure demonstration. Final report
Abstract
This report describes and evaluates PG and E`s Open Systems Communication Architecture (OSCA) demonstration project, which was contracted to the electric power Research Institute (EPRI) in November 1993. OSCA is based on EPRI`s Utility Communications Architecture (UCA{trademark}) and Database Access Integration Services (DAIS{trademark}). The contract with EPRI was completed at the end of December 1995. PG and E continued to fund and refine the demonstration applications during 1996. The report contains five chapters and three appendices. Chapter 1 is an executive summary. Chapter 2 discusses the as-built project scope. Chapter 3 describes PG and E`s implementation of the demonstration projects, including selected test sites and vendors, the installed communications infrastructure, and the applications developed to run over this infrastructure. Chapter 4 assesses the technical findings and makes recommendations for future research. Chapter 5 discusses migration issues to open systems and makes some suggestions for a migration strategy. Appendix A provides a brief overview of the development of Utility Communications Architecture (UCA), a history of PG and E`s involvement in the UCA effort, including the business motivation behind this participation, and the effect of regulatory and market drivers on the development of the UCA and DAIS projects. An overview of protocolmore »
