This paper reviews the current trends in the oil and gas industry to try and reduce costs by corporate downsizing, reorganization, and consolidation of duties. It then goes on to compare the costs of oil and gas through time to show that once it is adjusted, that prices are not significantly different than in the early 70`s when oil and gas industries were booming. The article analyzes the positive effects of increased production even in a time of cost decline. It shows the effects on the personnel of a company when they see forward progress in a regressive market. It then reviews the history of the petroleum engineer and the outlook for future job security and the need for diversification.
