Abstract

We present 990 previously unpublished optical linear polarization measurements of quasars, active galactic nuclei, and some stars observed for interstellar polarization. The observations, covering the period 1981-2000, were made with McDonald Observatory's 2.1 m Struve reflector and the Breger photopolarimeter.

We performed an integrated optical polarization survey of 70 nearby galaxies to study the relationship between linear polarization and galaxy properties. To date this is the largest survey of its kind. The data were collected at McDonald Observatory using the Imaging Grism Polarimeter on the Otto Struve 2.1 m telescope. Most of the galaxies did not have significant level of linear polarization, where the bulk is <1%. A fraction of the galaxies showed a loose correlation between the polarization and position angle of the galaxy, indicating that dust scattering is the main source of optical polarization. Properties of the Magellanic-type spirals. I. Surface photometry of NGC 4618 and NGC 4625

CCD and photographic BVRI broadband surface photometric observations obtained at McDonald Observatory, Capilla Peak Observatory, Asiago Observatory, and with the 2.1-m Struve reflector during the period 1963-1990 are presented for the close pair of SBm galaxies NGC 4618 and NGC 4625. The data are presented in extensive contour maps, graphs, and tables and discussed in detail. Both galaxies are identified as Magellanic-type spirals, at a mean distance of 6.3 + or - 0.6 Mpc, with segmented radial luminosity profiles and evidence of significant massive star formation in the dominant spiral arms. 41 refs.

We present the results of our search for variable stars using the long-term Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) monitoring of white dwarf ZTF J0139+5245 with the two 1.0 m telescope nodes located at McDonald Observatory using the Sinistro imaging instrument. COSMIC OPTICAL BACKGROUND: THE VIEW FROM PIONEER 10/11

We present the new constraints on the cosmic optical background (COB) obtained from an analysis of the Pioneer 10/11 Imaging Photopolarimeter (IPP) data. After careful examination of data quality, the usable measurements free from the zodiacal light are integrated into sky maps at the blue ({approx}0.44 {mu}m) and red ({approx}0.64 {mu}m) band. Accurate starlight subtraction is achieved by referring to all-sky star catalogs and a Galactic stellar population synthesis model down to 32.0 mag.
