Three-photon ionization of gadolinium (Gd) atom was investigated. The ions were detected by time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The amount of residual atoms in the excited state after the laser illumination in the interaction region was estimated by measuring the variation of the fluorescence signal. This method was used to estimate the ionization efficiency.
