Abstract

The convergence between extended structure provided by X-ray diffraction and local structure of antimony extracted from spectroscopic data is reached through an alternative crystallographic description for a Sb-pyrochlore arrangement within the same space group symmetry of pyrochlore structure-type. A full account on this description is presented, along with a calculated diffraction pattern matching experimental data and conforming to Sb 1s XANES data.

New cubic defect pyrochlore type A{sub x}Ln{sub y}Sb{sub 2}O{sub 6+z} antimoniates (0<x,y,z<1; A=Rb, Cs, Tl; Ln=Eu, Gd, and Y) (space group Fd3m) were prepared by calcination in air at 650 deg. C of compositions obtained by a coprecipitation method. Their crystal structures were refined by the Rietveld procedure and further confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) experiments. Refinements of the X-ray powder diffraction data show a partial and statistical occupation of the 8b site by alkaline or thallous ions and oxygen and lead to values close to 0.33 for the only refinable positional x parameter of the 48f oxygenated site.

Optimizing experimental design, overcoming challenges, and gaining valuable information from the Sb K-edge XANES region

There are many challenges associated with collecting, processing, and interpreting high-energy XAS data. The most significant of these are broad spectra, minimal separation of edge positions, and high background owing to the Compton tail. Studies of the Sb system are a particular challenge owing to its complex bonding character and formation of mixed oxidation-state minerals. Furthermore, in environmental samples such as stream sediment containing mine waste, different Sb phases may coexist. Isostructural compounds RE{sub 3}Sb{sub 3}Co{sub 2}O{sub 14} (RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm–Ho) with an ordered pyrochlore structure were synthesized. The structure of La{sub 3}Sb{sub 3}Co{sub 2}O{sub 14} was solved ab initio based on powder XRD data, and refined by combining with high resolution neutron diffraction data. La{sub 3}Sb{sub 3}Co{sub 2}O{sub 14} crystallizes in the space group R-3m with the unit cell parameters a=7.52954(2) Å and c=17.59983(6) Å. Crystal structure of Mn{sub 2}Ln{sub 3}Sb{sub 3}O{sub 14} (Ln=La, Pr and Nd): A new ordered rhombohedral pyrochlore

Manganese rare earth antimonates with the formula Mn{sub 2}Ln{sub 3}Sb{sub 3}O{sub 14} (Ln=La–Yb and Y) have been prepared and their structures were determined by the Rietveld method using X-ray diffraction data. The compounds with Ln=La, Pr and Nd crystallize in a rhombohedral supercell of the cubic fluorite with the space group R3{sup ¯}m and with the lattice parameters a{sub h}≈√2a{sub c} and c{sub h}≈2√3a{sub c}, where a{sub c} denotes the lattice constant of the cubic fluorite. Pyrochlore oxides of the type Mn/sub 2/Sb/sub 2/O/sub 7/ and (Mn/sub 2//sub 1-x/Cd/sub x/)/sub 2/Sb/sub 2/O/sup 7/ have been synthesized by high-temperature solid state reactions and characterized by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the compound Mn/sub 2/Sb/sub 2/O/sub 7/ has a rhombohedrally distorted pyrochlore structure. In the solid solution (Mn/sub 1-x/Cd/sub x/)/sub 2/Sb/sub 2/O/sub 7/, the phases with x greater than or equal to 0.6 are cubic.
