Equilibrium and Stability of Non-Neutral Plasma with Unmagnetized Ions Born at Rest and Moving along Large Orbits

The equilibrium and the stability of the plasma cylinder, placed in crossed fields, are studied on the ground of kinetic treatment of ions. Plasma consists of magnetized electrons and unmagnetized collisionless ions of small density, that were born at rest under ionization of residual gas in the volume of cylinder. The equilibrium distribution function of ions, taking into account this peculiarity of ions birth, and its moments (density, rotation frequency, pressure tensor) are evaluated as per square-law dependence of electric potential on radius. For the plasma with 'hot' electrons the non-local problem of stability is treated on the basis of solution of Vlasov equation for ions in independent variables 'cylindrical coordinates of a particle guiding center - cylindrical coordinates of a particle on Larmor circle'. The obtained dispersion equation is valid within the total range of ion frequencies in crossed fields, for arbitrary strengths of fields (i.e. for magnetized and unmagnetized ions). It is shown that in a strong electric field the dimensionless frequency spectrum in the ion rotating frame of reference does not depend on ion mass, i.e. the spectrum is universal. The dispersion equation is solved numerically for various azimuth wave numbers. The solutions are presented in graphic form and are similar to the dispersion curves of electron oscillations of unbounded homogeneous plasma with oscillator-type distribution function. For two lowest radial modes the instability of 'negative mass'-type is possible having the frequency of the order of ion radial oscillation and the maximal growth rate up to 0.5 of the latter.
