Title: Synthesis and characterization of Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6.67}Se{sub 13} and its filled variants Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6}PbSe{sub 13} and Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6}SnSe{sub 13}

The three title compounds were synthesized at 710 C and their structure type is isotypic to Sr{sub 4}Bi{sub 6}Se{sub 13} and {beta}-K{sub 2}Bi{sub 8}Se{sub 13}. The compounds crystallize in P2{sub 1}/m (Z = 2) with a = 17.2228(6) {angstrom}, b = 4.2729(1) {angstrom}, c = 18.4659(6) {angstrom}, {beta} = 90.720(0){degree} for Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6.67}Se{sub 13}; a = 17.2427(4) {angstrom}, b = 4.2736(1) {angstrom}, c = 18.4560(4) {angstrom}, {beta} = 90.861(1){degree} for Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6}PbSe{sub 13}; and a = 17.2498(5) {angstrom}, b = 4.2912(1) {angstrom}, c = 18.4590(5) {angstrom}, and {beta} = 90.679(1){degree} for Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6}SnSe{sub 13}. The coordination environments of Bi/Pb/Sn are distorted Se octahedra, while the coordination spheres of Ba are bi- or tricapped trigonal prisms. Transport measurements indicate that Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6.67}Se{sub 13} and Ba{sub 3}Bi{sub 6}PbSe{sub 13} are semiconducting.
