Title: Cryogenically cooled detector pin mount

Abstract

A focal plane assembly facilitates a molybdenum base plate being mounted to another plate made from aluminum. The molybdenum pin is an interference fit (press fit) in the aluminum base plate. An annular cut out area in the base plate forms two annular flexures.

This paper presents the study of stress distribution in a double-shear lap joint with interference fit pin subjected to inplane plate loads using FELJNT, a finite element software developed for this special purpose. FELJNT accounts for the effects of clamping and flexure of the bolt without having to adopt a laborious three-dimensional analysis. It carries out stress analysis in an axisymmetric region around the pin under non-axisymmetric loading. Scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy is a powerful tool for imaging local magnetic properties of materials and devices, but it requires a low-vibration cryogenic environment, traditionally achieved by thermal contact with a bath of liquid helium or the mixing chamber of a “wet” dilution refrigerator. We mount a SQUID microscope on the 3 K plate of a Bluefors cryocooler and characterize its vibration spectrum by measuring SQUID noise in a region of sharp flux gradient. By implementing passive vibration isolation, we reduce relative sensor-sample vibrations to 20 nm in-plane and 15 nm out-of-plane. A variable-temperature sample stage thatmore »« less

Specifications are given for the fabrication of Al--Pu alloy pins clad in aluminum. The cladding components were loy pins clad in alummum. The cladding components were fabricated from 1100 aluminum, 1/16 in. in diameter. End caps were fabricated from the same material by a series of passes through draw plates to 0.035-in. diameter. The core material was cast as cylinders 0.375 in. in diameter and approximately 2 in. long in a heated graphite mold. The alloy composition was 15.75 wt.% plutonium. Wind turbine gearboxes do not achieve their expected design life. The cost of gearbox replacements and rebuilds and the downtime associated with these failures increase the cost of wind energy. In 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy established the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Gearbox Reliability Collaborative (GRC). Its goals are to understand the root causes of premature gearbox failures and improve their reliability. To date, the GRC has focused on a 750-kW drivetrain with a three-stage, three-point-mounted gearbox.
