This paper reports on a common practice in Monte Carlo radiation transport codes which is to start each random walk a specified number of steps up the random number sequence from the previous one. This is called the stride in the random number sequence between source particles. It is used for correlated sampling or to provide tree-structured random numbers. A new random number generator algorithm for the major Monte Carlo code MCNP has been written to allow adjustment of the random number stride. This random number generator is machine portable. The intelligent random number technique in MCNP

A Monte Carlo learning and biasing technique that does its learning and biasing in the random number space rather than in the physical phase-space has been implemented in the Monte Carlo computer code MCNP. The technique was successfully applied on a simple penetration problem, and the results are given. The technique was also applied to a streaming problem with only marginal success.

In a recent paper, Richard Crandall and the present author established that each of a certain class of explicitly given real constants, uncountably infinite in number, is b-normal, for an integer that appears in the formula defining the constant. Random number generators are integral components to Monte Carlo codes. They provide the pseudorandom number sequence used to actually sample the distributions of interest. As a result, they are one of the most important components to the software. The current recommended MCNP random number generator is a 63-bit linear congruential generator (LCG).
