Title: Radioactive waste treatment: Russian/U.S. partnership in R&D

Abstract

The U.S. Department of Energy`s Office of Waste Management is sponsoring joint U.S.-Russian research and development projects on chemical separations for treatment of radioactive wastes. This paper describes a project at the Khlopin Radium Institute in St. Petersburg. Scientists there, in cooperation with U.S. scientists, are investigating the applicability to U.S. waste streams of a Russian process for removal of cesium and strontium from highly radioactive wastes.
