Title: Improved Strontium and Actinide Separations

Abstract

High-level nuclear waste produced from fuel reprocessing operations at the Savannah River Site (SRS) requires pretreatment to remove 137Cs, 90Sr, and alpha-emitting radionuclides (i.e., actinides) prior to disposal. Separation processes planned at SRS include caustic side solvent extraction, for 137Cs removal, and ion exchange/sorption of 90Sr and alpha-emitting radionuclides with an inorganic material, monosodium titanate (MST) and modified MST (mMST). Speaker D.T. Hobbs presents the processes for these improved strontium and actinide separations and looks at how MST and mMST have performed.
