DOE ScienceCinema now offers a more intuitive search interface and navigation. The DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) redesigned DOE ScienceCinema to visually unify its product environment, reflecting the new look of its flagship search tool OSTI.GOV and the scientific software and services platform DOE CODE. In addition to the updated search interface, OSTI improved the homepage, added News to the site, and updated the FAQs.
The new search interface includes a filtering system on the left-hand side of the search results page to help refine your search. Runtime (ranges are provided), media type (audio or visual), publication date, creator/author, and research organization may be used individually or concurrently to fine-tune search results.
DOE ScienceCinema provides innovative, state-of-the-art audio indexing and speech recognition technology from IBM Watson to allow users to quickly find video and audio files, delivering precision searching already common in text-based databases. Users can perform an audio search for specific words and phrases, and precise snippets of the video where the search term was spoken will appear along with a timestamp. This may also be combined with standard metadata searching through the advanced search feature. Users may then select a snippet or a segment along the timestamp to begin playing the video at the exact point in the video where the words were spoken.
In addition to the general audio search box found on the homepage and header, DOE ScienceCinema offers the option to search within a specific record for spoken words or phrases from the Full Record page. This secondary search can help users further explore videos and find more topics of interest. Similarly to the way audio snippets are returned on the original search results page, when selected on the Full Record page, these snippets from within specific records will begin playing at the exact location your search term or phrase is spoken.
The DOE ScienceCinema redesign also added personal account registration, which allows you to save videos, create playlists, and export curated lists of records in different file formats (XML, CSV, Excel). Account registration is not mandatory, but it enables interactive features and customization, and sets the stage for more updates and expanded user capabilities.
DOE ScienceCinema is a multimedia search tool developed by OSTI to provide access to 3,600 video and audio files produced by DOE National Laboratories, other DOE research facilities, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). In consultation with researchers across the DOE complex, OSTI works continuously to enhance access to ever growing DOE R&D results. The redesign of DOE ScienceCinema is part of OSTI’s ongoing efforts to make science more open, efficient, and reproducible – and to better serve the needs of DOE-funded scientists and the American public.
