Title: Large longitudinal spin alignment generated in inelastic nuclear reactions

Abstract

Large longitudinal spin alignment of E/A = 24 MeV ⁷Li projectiles inelastically excited by Be, C, and Al targets was observed when the latter remain in their ground state. This alignment is a consequence of an angular-momentum-excitation-energy mismatch, which is well described by a DWBA cluster-model (α + t). The longitudinal alignment of several other systems is also well described by DWBA calculations, including one where a cluster model is inappropriate, demonstrating that the alignment mechanism is a more general phenomenon. Finally, predictions are made for inelastic excitation of ¹²C for beam energies above and below the mismatch threshold.

Here, we study the sequential breakup of E/A = 24.0 MeV ⁷Li projectiles excited through inelastic interactions with C, Be, and Al target nuclei. For peripheral events that do not excite the target, we find very large spin alignment of the excited ⁷Li projectiles longitudinal to the beam axis. This spin alignment is independent of the target used, and we propose a simple alignment mechanism that arises from an angular-momentum-excitation-energy mismatch. This mechanism is independent of the potential used for scattering and should be present in many scattering experiments.

Elastic and inelastic deuteron scattering on $sup 9$Be, $sup 11$B, $sup 12$C, and its theoretical interpretation (in German)

The angular distributions of the elastic and inelastic deuteron scattering on /sup 9/Be, /sup 11/B, and /sup 12/C were measured with the Heidelb erg MP tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. At a constantly maintained relative energy of 14.5 MeV of the bombarding projectile--target system, the laboratory incident energies were 17.745, 17.155, and 16.939 MeV. The particle separation was done by the electronic pulse multiplication method. The deflected 11.8-MeV deuteron beam of the Heidelberg cyclotron was used for measurement of the target thickness. The shields of the counter telescope were measured with the 0.05-MeV alpha particles of a /sup 212/Pb source.more »« less
Structure of the breathing mode of the nucleon from high-energy p-p scattering

Spectra of p-p and {pi}-p scattering at beam momenta between 6 and 30 GeV/c have been reanalyzed. These show strong excitation of N* resonances, the strongest one corresponding to the 'scalar' P{sub 11} excitation (breathing mode) at m{sub 0}=1400{+-}10 MeV with {gamma}=200{+-}20 MeV. The result of a strong scalar excitation is supported by a large longitudinal amplitude S{sub 1/2} extracted from e-p scattering. From exclusive data on p+p{yields}pp{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, a large 2{pi}-N decay branch for the P{sub 11} resonance of B{sub 2{pi}}=75{+-}20% has been extracted.The differential cross sections were described in a double-folding approach, assuming multigluon exchange as themore »« less

Dissipative Reactions with Intermediate-Energy Beams: A Novel Approach to Populate Complex-Structure States in Rare Isotopes

A novel pathway for the formation of multiparticle-multihole excited states in rare isotopes is reported from highly energy- and momentum-dissipative inelastic-scattering events measured in reactions of an intermediate-energy beam of ³⁸Ca on a Be target. The negative-parity, complex-structure final states in ³⁸Ca are observed following the in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of events in the ⁹Be(³⁸Ca, ³⁸Ca + γ)X reaction in which the scattered projectile loses longitudinal momentum of order Δp_|| = 700 MeV/c.
