Title: Chiral algebras, localization and surface defects

Abstract

Four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal quantum field theories contain a subsector carrying the structure of a chiral algebra. Using localization techniques, we show for the free hypermultiplet that this structure can be accessed directly from the path integral on the four-sphere. We extend the localization computation to include supersymmetric surface defects described by a generic 4d/2d coupled system. The presence of a defect corresponds to considering a module of the chiral algebra: our results provide a calculational window into its structure constants.

Here, we investigate superconformal surface defects in four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal theories. Each such defect gives rise to a module of the associated chiral algebra and the surface defect Schur index is the character of this module. Various natural chiral algebra operations such as Drinfield-Sokolov reduction and spectral flow can be interpreted as constructions involving four-dimensional surface defects. We compute the index of these defects in the free hypermultiplet theory and Argyres-Douglas theories, using both infrared techniques involving BPS states, as well as renormalization group flows onto Higgs branches. Macdonald index and chiral algebra

For any 4dN = 2 SCFT, there is a subsector described by a 2d chiral algebra. The vacuum character of the chiral algebra reproduces the Schur index of the corresponding 4d theory. The Macdonald index counts the same set of operators as the Schur index, but the former has one more fugacity than the latter. Here, we conjecture a prescription to obtain the Macdonald index from the chiral algebra. The vacuum module admits a filtration, from which we construct an associated graded vector space. From this grading, we conjecture a notion of refined character for the vacuum module of a chiral algebra, which reproduces the Macdonald index. Four-dimensional lens space index from two-dimensional chiral algebra

We study the supersymmetric partition function on S¹ × L(r, 1), or the lens space index of four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal field theories and their connection to two-dimensional chiral algebras. We primarily focus on free theories as well as ArgyresDouglas theories of type (A₁, A_k) and (A₁, D_k). We observe that in specific limits, the lens space index is reproduced in terms of the (refined) character of an appropriately twisted module of the associated two-dimensional chiral algebra or a generalized vertex operator algebra. A note on chiral trace relations from qq-characters

We study chiral operators in four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories. We provide a general procedure to derive the exact relations among the vacuum expectation values of chiral operators in the Ω-background using the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations of qq-characters. We demonstrate our procedure using several examples. For pure SU(N) gauge theory and SU(N) gauge theory with 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we verify the relations conjectured previously in the literature. We also briefly discuss the relations in SU(N) linear superconformal quiver gauge theories.
