Dynamics of entanglement in expanding quantum fields

Title: Dynamics of entanglement in expanding quantum fields

Abstract

Here, we develop a novel real-time approach to computing the entanglement between spatial regions for Gaussian states in quantum field theory. The entanglement entropy is characterized in terms of local correlation functions on space-like Cauchy hypersurfaces. The framework is applied to explore an expanding light cone geometry in the particular case of the Schwinger model for quantum electrodynamics in 1+1 space-time dimensions. We observe that the entanglement entropy becomes extensive in rapidity at early times and that the corresponding local reduced density matrix is a thermal density matrix for excitations around a coherent field with a time dependent temperature. Since the Schwinger model successfully describes many features of multiparticle production in e⁺e^- collisions, our results provide an attractive explanation in this framework for the apparent thermal nature of multiparticle production even in the absence of significant final state scattering.

Entanglement entropy for spatial subregions is difficult to define in string theory because of the extended nature of strings. Here we propose a definition for bosonic open strings using the framework of string field theory. Revivals and entanglement from initially entangled mixed states of a damped Jaynes-Cummings model

An exact density matrix of a phase-damped Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) with entangled Bell-like initial states formed from a model two-state atom and sets of adjacent photon number states of a single-mode radiation field is presented. The entanglement of the initial states and the subsequent time evolution is assured by finding a positive lower bound on the concurrence of local 2x2 projections of the full 2x{infinity} JCM density matrix. Thermal excitation spectrum from entanglement in an expanding quantum string

Here, a surprising result in e⁺e^- collisions is that the particle spectra from the string formed between the expanding quark-antiquark pair have thermal properties even though scatterings appear not to be frequent enough to explain this. We address this problem by considering the finite observable interval of a relativistic quantum string in terms of its reduced density operator by tracing over the complement region. We show how quantum entanglement in the presence of a horizon in spacetime for the causal transfer of information leads locally to a reduced mixed-state density operator. Quark and gluon entanglement in the proton on the light cone at intermediate $x$

In QCD with N_c colors the antisymmetric valence quark color space singlet state ~ε_{i₁…iN_c}|i₁,…,i_{N_c} > of the proton corresponds to the reduced density matrix ρ_ij = (1/N_c)δ_ij for a single color degree of freedom. Its degenerate spectrum of eigenvalues, λ_i = 1/N_c, the purity tr ρ² = 1/N_c, and the von Neumann entropy S_vN = log(N_c) all indicate maximal entanglement of color. On the other hand, for N_c → ∞ the spatial wave function of the proton factorizes into valence quark wave functions determined by a mean field [E. Witten, Nucl. Phys. Quark pair angular correlations in the proton: Entropy versus entanglement negativity

Two-particle correlations in the proton on the light front are described by a mixed density matrix obtained by tracing over all other, unobserved, degrees of freedom. We quantify genuinely quantum quark azimuthal correlations in terms of the entanglement negativity measure of quantum information theory. While the two-quark state in color space is one of high-entropy and weak-quantum correlation, we find that a standard three-quark model wave function from the literature predicts an azimuthally correlated state of low-entropy and high-entanglement negativity.
