Abstract

The main goal of the pair spectrometer of the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab is to determine the photon beam flux and to measure beam polarization. Here, we present the design of the pair spectrometer and the performance results during the first commissioning runs of the GlueX experiment.

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry for the ETA and ETA Prime Mesons with the GlueX Experiment

The GlueX Experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab ultimately aims to provide evidence of hybrid mesons, quark-antiquark pairs with gluonic excitations, which are predicted by quantum chromodynamics calculations on the lattice. GlueX features a linearly-polarized photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target and a nearly-four-pi hermetic detector capable of measuring positions and momenta of both charged and neutral final state particles generated in the target.
