Title: Impact of heavy-flavour production cross sections measured by the LHCb experiment on parton distribution functions at low x

Abstract

The impact of recent measurements of heavy-flavour production in deep inelastic ep scattering and in pp collisions on parton distribution functions is studied in a QCD analysis in the fixed-flavour number scheme at next-to-leading order. Differential cross sections of charm- and beauty-hadron production measured by LHCb are used together with inclusive and heavy-flavour production cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The heavy-flavour data of the LHCb experiment impose additional constraints on the gluon and the sea-quark distributions at low partonic fractions x of the proton momentum, down to x~5×10^-6. This kinematic range is currently not covered by other experimental data in perturbative QCD fits.

Journal Article Shehzadi, R - AIP Conference Proceedings

Recent results on jet cross sections and heavy-flavor production in photoproduction and neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are presented. The jet measurements are used to perform stringent tests of perturbative QCD, to extract precise values of the strong coupling and to constrain further the proton and photon parton distribution functions. The measurement of beauty and charm production at HERA is an important testing ground for perturbative QCD and can provide information on the structure of the proton.

A QCD fit analysis to the combined HERA-I inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations for e{sup {+-}p} scattering resulting into a competitive NLO PDF set, HERAPDF1.0 is presented. HERAPDF at NNLO fits are presented as well, resulting, however, in a worse description of the combined HERA data. In addition, the QCD fit analysis of the combined HERA-I inclusive deep inelastic cross sections has been extended to include combined HERA II measurements at high Q{sup 2}. New Perspectives for QCD Physics at the LHC

I review a number of topics where conventional wisdom relevant to hadron physics at the LHC has been challenged. For example, the initial-state and final-state interactions of the quarks and gluons entering perturbative QCD hard-scattering subprocesses lead to the breakdown of traditional concepts of factorization and universality for transverse-momentum-dependent observables at leading twist. The soft-gluon rescattering effects, which are associated with the Wilson line of the propagating partons, also lead to Bjorken-scaling single-spin asymmetries, diffractive deep inelastic scattering, the breakdown of the Lam-Tung leading-twist relation in Drell-Yan reactions, as well as nuclear shadowing.
