Title: Visualizing Materials Chemistry at Atomic Resolution

Analytical electron microscopy—empowered by advances in electron optics and detectors—is poised to radically transform the understanding of the complex phenomena arising from atomic and electronic structure in materials chemistry. In their Feature article, Sergio I. Sanchez, Matthew W. Small, Shankar Sivaramakrishnan, Jianguo Wen, Jian-Min Zuo, and Ralph G. Nuzzo of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign discuss these recent advances in depth. The cover shows a rendering of an electron beam probing the atomic structure of a metal nanoparticle. In the background is an STEM image of an Au nanoparticle illustrating the capacities of state-of-the-art electron microscopy as a characterization tool in materials chemistry.
