Heterotic backgrounds via generalised geometry: moment maps and moduli

Title: Heterotic backgrounds via generalised geometry: moment maps and moduli

Abstract

We describe the geometry of generic heterotic backgrounds preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions using the language of generalised geometry. They are characterised by an SU(3) × Spin(6 + n) structure within O(6, 6 + n) x $$\mathbb{R}$$⁺ generalised geometry. Supersymmetry of the background is encoded in the existence of an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent bundle and the vanishing of a moment map for the action of diffeomorphisms and gauge symmetries. We give both the superpotential and the Kähler potential for a generic background, showing that the latter defines a natural Hitchin functional for heterotic geometries. Intriguingly, this formulation suggests new connections to geometric invariant theory and an extended notion of stability. Finally we show that the analysis of infinitesimal deformations of these geometric structures naturally reproduces the known cohomologies that count the massless moduli of supersymmetric heterotic backgrounds.

Explicit soft supersymmetry breaking in the heterotic M-theory B - L MSSM

The strongly coupled heterotic M-theory vacuum for both the observable and hidden sectors of the B - L MSSM theory is reviewed, including a discussion of the “bundle” constraints that both the observable sector SU(4) vector bundle and the hidden sector bundle induced from a single line bundle must satisfy. Gaugino condensation is then introduced within this context, and the hidden sector bundles that exhibit gaugino condensation are presented. The condensation scale is computed, singling out one line bundle whose associated condensation scale is low enough to be compatible with the energy scales available at the LHC. Stabilizing all geometric moduli in heterotic Calabi-Yau vacua

We propose a scenario to stabilize all geometric moduli - that is, the complex structure, Kähler moduli and the dilaton - in smooth heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications without Neveu-Schwarz three-form flux. This is accomplished using the gauge bundle required in any heterotic compactification, whose perturbative effects on the moduli are combined with non-perturbative corrections. We argue that, for appropriate gauge bundles, all complex structure and a large number of other moduli can be perturbatively stabilized - in the most restrictive case, leaving only one combination of Kähler moduli and the dilaton as a flat direction. Integrable deformation of $$\mathbb{C}$$Pⁿ and generalised Kähler geometry

We build on the results of [1] for generalised frame fields on generalised quotient spaces and study integrable deformations for CPⁿ. In particular we show how, when the target space of the Principal Chiral Model is a complex projective space, a two-parameter deformation can be introduced in principle. The second parameter can however be removed via a diffeomorphism, which we construct explicitly, in accordance with the results stemming from a thorough integrability analysis we carry out. Heterotic instanton superpotentials from complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds

We study Pfaffians that appear in non-perturbative superpotential terms arising from worldsheet instantons in heterotic theories. A result by Beasley and Witten shows that these instanton contributions cancel among curves within a given homology class for Calabi-Yau manifolds that can be described as hypersurfaces or complete intersections in projective or toric ambient spaces.
