The present report provides the toxicity data stratified by the treatment arm and technique. Palliation of brain metastases in a favorable patient population: a randomized clinical trial by the radiation therapy oncology group

The palliative effectiveness of a short, intensive course of brain irradiation (3000 rad in 2 weeks) was compared to that of a high-dose course (5000 rad in 4 weeks) in a randomized RTOG clinical trial. Eighty percent of the 255 evaluable patients had lung primaries, 7% breast, and 13% other or unknown primaries. Patients with evidence of extra-cranial metastases, uncontrolled primaries, or Class IV Neurologic Function (NFIV) were excluded. The Cf-252 (Cf) neutron brachytherapy (NT) trials should continue to explore the feasibility of Cf-NT treatment of a variety of bulky human cancers. Results hitherto from the USA (Lexington), Japan, USSR, and England justify trials on a research basis. The term ''bulky'' is imprecise and in future studies should be specified by measurement. The initial results of a prospective randomized collaborative therapeutic trial of split-course radiotherapy in carcinoma of the nasopharynx are reported. The split-course therapy consisted of two irradiation courses, each delivering 3000 rad in 2 weeks, in 10 fractions of 300 rad. The courses were separated by a rest period of 3 weeks. Continuous radiation therapy consisted of 30 fractions of 220 rad each, for a total dose of 6600 rad.
