The nuclear reactor accident at Three Mile Island in March 1979 resulted in the release of radioactivity to the environment. Radiation exposure of the workers and the general population living in the vicinity of the damaged nuclear reactor was estimated based on dose measurements, meteorological conditions, demographic characteristics, reconstruction of the source term, and a number of other factors. A wide variety of agents has been demonstrated to be capable of affecting the fetus in utero. Certain generalizations can be made concerning these teratogens. Two of the most important of these principles are the specificity of the agent and the time during gestation of the exposure. Although noticeable adverse effects are structural malformations, there are numerous functional malformations, such as lower intelligence and poor reproductive outcome, that may follow exposure to these agents. The physiologic effects of ozone exposure have been documented through laboratory research and some epidemiologic studies. Some metropolitan areas in Mexico City have repeatedly had very high levels of ozone exposures for long periods. A non-representative sample of school-age children living in such areas was selected and followed up for 6 mo; the differences in their pulmonary function tests were assessed. Hydrogeologic assessment of exposure to solvent-contaminated drinking water: Pregnancy outcomes in relation to exposure

We recently concluded that exposure to solvent-contaminated drinking water was an unlikely explanation for observed excesses of adverse pregnancy outcomes during 1980-1981 in the Los Paseos neighborhood of Santa Clara County, California, because these excesses were not observed in an adjacent exposed area. The validity of this conclusion depends on the assumption that the two areas had comparable exposure. Using quantitative methods to model movement of the solvent leak plume and water flow within the distribution system, we estimated that women with adverse outcomes were no more likely to have received contaminated water than women with normal live births.
