Title: Triaxiality in the mid-shell nucleus ¹¹²Pd

Abstract

In this work, lifetimes of low-spin excited states in ¹¹²Pd were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique. The nucleus of interest was populated in a ¹¹⁰Pd(¹⁸O, ¹⁶O) ¹¹²Pd reaction using the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Three lifetimes of ground-state band members and one lifetime of the γ band were measured. From these lifetimes reduced transition probabilities were extracted and compared to interacting boson model, γ-soft calculations, and Davydov calculations. The lifetime of the $$2_{γ}^{+}$$ gives some insights on the nuclear shape and structure of the γ band. The deduced transition rates show an indicator for a rigid triaxial nucleus as well as more indicators for a γ-soft nucleus.

Lifetimes of the yrast states up to 12{sup +} and of a negative parity 5{sup -} state in {sup 100}Pd were measured by means of the recoil distance Doppler shift technique. The experiment was performed at the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator with the Cologne Plunger using the reaction {sup 92}Mo({sup 11}B,p2n) to populate excited states in {sup 100}Pd. Lifetimes were determined by analyzing the transitions in coincidence mode employing the differential decay curve method. The obtained E2 transition strengths were compared to predictions from collective models and the shell model.

The N = 52 nucleus {sup 98}Pd was investigated at the Cologne TANDEM accelerator both with the Cologne plunger using the recoil distance Doppler-shift method (RDDS) and with the Cologne HORUS spectrometer for a {gamma}{gamma} angular correlation experiment. For the first time lifetimes of yrast states and highly excited low-spin states were measured in {sup 98}Pd and the low-spin level scheme was extended. The X(5) symmetry describes nuclei at the critical point of the shape phase transition from axially deformed rotor nuclei to spherical vibrators. {sup 150}Nd, {sup 152}Sm, and {sup 154}Gd were the first nuclei where the predicted characteristics of the X(5) symmetry were observed. E2 transition probabilities in {sup 114}Te: A conundrum

Lifetimes in {sup 114}Te were determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique with a plunger device coupled to five HP Ge detectors enhanced by one Euroball cluster detector. The experiment was carried out at the Cologne FN Tandem facility using the {sup 93}Nb({sup 24}Mg,p2n) reaction at 90 MeV. The differential decay curve method in coincidence mode was employed to derive lifetimes for seven excited states, whereas the lifetime of an isomeric state was obtained in singles mode. The resulting E2 transition probabilities are shown to be very anomalous in comparison with the vibrational energy spacings of the ground-state band.

New insights into the nuclear structure in neutron-rich ^{112,114,115,116,117,118}Pd

New level schemes of ^{112,114,115,116,117,118}Pd are established by means of γ-γ-γ, γ-γ-γ-γ and γ-γ(θ) measurements of prompt fission γ rays from ²⁵²Cf using the Gammasphere multidetector array. Spins/parities were assigned to levels based on γ-γ angular correlation measurements, level systematics and decay patterns. In the even-N isotopes ^112,114,116Pd, two sets of odd-parity bands were identified and extended with spins measured in each band. The oddparity bands with large level staggerings were interpreted as disturbed chirality with less pronounced triaxial deformations in the Pd isotopes than observed in the chiral symmetry breaking ^110,112Ru with maximum triaxiality.
