Title: Spectroscopy along Flerovium Decay Chains: Discovery of Ds 280 and an Excited State in Cn 282

Abstract

A nuclear spectroscopy experiment was conducted to study α-decay chains stemming from isotopes of flerovium (element Z=114). An upgraded TASISpec decay station was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. The fusion-evaporation reactions 48Ca + 242Pu and 48Ca + 244Pu provided a total of 32 flerovium-candidate decay chains, of which two and eleven were firmly assigned to 286Fl and 288Fl, respectively. A prompt coincidence between a 9.60(1)-MeV α particle event and a 0.36(1)-MeV conversion electron marked the first observation of an excited state in an even-even isotope of the heaviest man-made elements, namely 282Cn. Spectroscopy of 288Fl decay chains fixed Qα = 10.06(1) MeV. In one case, a Qα = 9.46(1)-MeV decay from 284Cn into 280Ds was observed, with 280Ds fissioning after only 518 μs. The impact of these findings, aggregated with existing data on decay chains of 286,288Fl, on the size of an anticipated shell gap at proton number Z = 114 is discussed in light of predictions from two beyond-mean-field calculations, which take into account triaxial deformation.

A new spontaneously fissioning (SF) isotope <sup>284</sup>Fl was produced for the first time in the <sup>240</sup>Pu + <sup>48</sup>Ca (250 MeV) and <sup>239</sup>Pu + <sup>48</sup>Ca (245 MeV) reactions. The cross section of the <sup>239</sup>Pu (<sup>48</sup>Ca , 3 n) <sup>284</sup>Fl reaction channel was about 20 times lower than predicted by theoretical models and about 50 times lower than the maximum fusion-evaporation cross section for the 3 n and 4 n channels<a href='#' onclick='$(this).hide().next().show().next().show();return false;' style='margin-left:10px;'>more »</a><span style='display:none;'> measured in the <sup>244</sup>Pu + <sup>48</sup>Ca reaction. In the <sup>240</sup>Pu + <sup>48</sup>Ca experiment, performed at 245 MeV in order to maximize the 3 n -evaporation channel, three decay chains of <sup>285</sup>Fl were detected. The α -decay energy of <sup>285</sup>Fl was measured for the first time and decay properties of its descendants <sup>281</sup>Cn , <sup>277</sup>Ds , <sup>273</sup>Hs , <sup>269</sup>Sg, and <sup>265</sup>Rf were determined with higher accuracy. The assignment of SF events observed during the irradiation of the <sup>240</sup>Pu target with a 250 MeV <sup>48</sup>Ca beam to <sup>284</sup>Fl decay is presented and discussed. The cross sections at both <sup>48</sup>Ca energies are similar and exceed that observed in the reaction with the lighter isotope <sup>239</sup>Pu by a factor of 10. The resulting series of α decays were studied using α-photon and α-x-ray spectroscopies. Short-lived α-decaying nuclei "northeast" of Pb208 in the chart of nuclides were studied using the reaction Ca48+Am243 with the decay station TASISpec at TASCA, GSI Darmstadt. Decay energies and times from pile-up events were extracted with a tailor-made pulse-shape analysis routine and specific α-decay chains were identified in a correlation analysis. Decay chains starting with the even-even Ra220 and its odd-A neighbors, Fr219, and Ra221,219, with a focus on the Ra219→Rn215 decay, were studied by means of α-γ spectroscopy. The experimental data are reproduced to accuracies comparable to other contemporary models of α decay of SHN. We apply the STM to the case of the α decaying high-K isomers identified in the decay chains of <sup>270</sup>Ds . The α emitters, <sup>108</sup>Xe [E<sub>α</sub> = 4.4(2) MeV, T<sub>1/2</sub> = 58<sup> <math> <munderover> <mi> +106 </mi> <mi> -23 </mi> </munderover> </math></sup> μs] and <sup>104</sup>Te[E<sub>α</sub> = 4.9(2) MeV, T<sub>1/2</sub> < 18 ns], decaying into doubly magic <sup>100</sup>Sn were produced using a fusion-evaporation reaction <sup>54</sup>Fe(<sup>58</sup>Ni, 4n)<sup>108</sup>Xe, and identified with a recoil mass separator and an implantation-decay correlation technique. This is the first time alpha radioactivity has been observed to a heavy self-conjugate nucleus. A previous benchmark for study of this fundamental decay mode has been the decay of <sup>212</sup>Po into doubly magic <sup>208</sup>Pb. Enhanced proton-neutron interactions in the N = Z parent nuclei may result in superallowed α decays with reduced α-decay widths significantly greater than that for <sup>212</sup>Po.
