Title: Factorization and its breaking in dijet single transverse spin asymmetries in $p p$ collisions

Abstract

We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

Back-to-back inclusive dijets in DIS at small x: Sudakov suppression and gluon saturation at NLO

Back-to-back dijet cross-sections in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) at small xBj are suppressed by many-body multiple scattering and screening effects arising from gluon saturation at high parton densities. They are similarly sensitive in these kinematics to large Sudakov logarithms from soft gluon radiation. Uncovering novel physics in this DIS channel therefore requires understanding the interplay of the two phenomena. Spin asymmetries for vector boson production in polarized $p + p$ collisions

We study the cross section for vector boson (W^±/Z⁰/γ^{more » $$\star$$}) production in polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions for low transverse momentum of the observed vector boson. For the case where one measures the transverse momentum and azimuthal angle of the vector bosons, we present the cross sections and the associated spin asymmetries in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) at tree level within the TMD factorization formalism. To assess the feasibility of experimental measurements, we estimate the spin asymmetries forW^±/Z⁰ boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by using current knowledge of the relevant TMDs. Here, we find that some of these asymmetries can be sizable if the suppression effect from TMD evolution is not too strong. The W program at RHIC can, thus, test and constrain spin theory by providing unique information on the universality properties of TMDs, TMD evolution, and the nucleon structure. For example, the single transverse spin asymmetries could be used to probe the well-known Sivers function f$$⊥q\atop{1T}$$, as well as the transversal helicity distribution g$$q\atop{1T}$$ via the parity-violating nature of W production.« less

Azimuthal asymmetries for hadron distributions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

Using a generalized parton model approach including spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, and assuming the validity of factorization for large-p{sub T} jet production in hadronic collisions, we study the azimuthal distribution around the jet axis of leading unpolarized or (pseudo)scalar hadrons, namely pions, produced in the jet fragmentation process. We identify the observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries for the unpolarized and single-polarized case related to quark and gluon-originated jets. Comparison of improved TMD and CGC frameworks in forward quark dijet production

For studying small-x gluon saturation in forward dijet production in high-energy dilute-dense collisions, the improved TMD (ITMD) factorization formula was recently proposed. In the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework, it represents the leading term of an expansion in inverse powers of the hard scale. It contains the leading-twist TMD factorization formula relevant for small gluon’s transverse momentum k_t, but also incorporates an all-order resummation of kinematical twists, resulting in a proper matching to high-energy factorization at large k_t. Hadron Structure Studies with a Fixed-Target Experiment at the LHC - AFTER@LHC

I will illustrate some of the opportunities for hadron structure studies at a future multi-purpose fixed-target experiment at the LHC. The proton beams at the LHC allow for the most energetic fixed-target experiments ever performed, opening new kinematic windows on hadron and nuclear physics which integrate the knowledge available from collider experiments (in particular RHIC and EIC).??
