Title: Corrigendum: Balmer emission induced by proton impact on atomic hydrogen

Abstract

In the original article [1] there is a misprint in the captions of figures 1 and 2. The AOCC calculations were labeled as (1) and the Glauber approximation as (2). It should be vice versa. In addition, in figure 2, the AOCC cross sections for excitation into the 3d1 and 3d2 states (dotted lines in panels (b) and (c)) were mistakenly reduced by a factor of 0.7. The correct results are shown below in the updated figure. Furthermore, these corrections do not affect the conclusions drawn in [1].

The semiclassical two-centre convergent-close-coupling approach is applied to study Balmer emission in proton-hydrogen scattering at the incident proton energies from 5–1 MeV. The approach uses wave-packet pseudostates for the discretization of the continuous spectrum of the hydrogen atom, constructed from the Coulomb wave function. All cross sections for target excitation into the final states with principal quantum numbers n = 3 and 4 required for obtaining the Balmer emission cross sections, polarisation fraction and Balmer decrement are calculated. Large deuteron vector and tensor asymmetries were measured for the first time at intermediate energies. The polarized deuteron beam (with tensor and vector components of 0.75 and 0.25, respectively) was used at energies of 2.0, 1.6, and 1.2 GeV. The tensor and vector quantities P/sub yy/ and P/sub y/ were extracted from the data obtained within beam polarization normal to the scattering plane, and P/sub xx/ was obtained when the polarization was precessed into the scattering plane. We report a method for the precision measurement of the oscillator strengths and the branching ratios of the decay channels of the 6d7p 3F o 2 state in 226Ra. This method exploits a set of metastable states present in Ra, allowing a measurement of the oscillator strengths that does not require knowledge of the number of atoms in the atomic beam. We measure the oscillator strengths and the branching ratios for decays to the 7s6d 3D1, 7s6d 3D2, and 7s6d 1D2 states and constrain the branching ratio to the 7s6d 3D3 state to be less than 0.4% (68% confidence limit).more »« less
