The majority of early studies used X-ray diffraction, but this requires a model to interpret the diffraction process. A turbostratic model has been applied by Warren, Franklin and Bacon to a wide range of materials including both soft and hard carbons. Simultaneous crystallization of diamond and cubic boron nitride from the graphite relative BC[sub 2]N under high pressure/high temperature conditions

Graphite BC[sub 2]N has been compressed with Co metal at a pressure of 5.5 GPa and temperatures of 1400-1600[degrees]C. The principal resulting products were crystals (average dimension 3 [mu]m) with cubiclike facets. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern revealed two kinds of cubic phase, in approximately equal amounts, which were identified as diamond and cBN on the basis of their lattice parameters. The kwh price of energy produced by a nuclear reactor depends to a great extent on the fuel elements. The individual cost items for the fuel elements are interrelated in a complicated manner. They include various factors: reactivity costs, behavior under irradiation, manufacturing costs, behavior in the reactor core, and specific output. Maximal performance can be reached only by a compromise between physical, metallurgical, manufacturing, and operational considerations. The results of studies made in the Commissariat d l'Energie Atomique Francais are surveyed, and the conclusions reached on the basis of present knowledge are discussed. (auth)

Poisson's Ratio and the Densification of Glass under High Pressure

Because of a relatively low atomic packing density, (C{sub g}) glasses experience significant densification under high hydrostatic pressure. Poisson's ratio ({nu}) is correlated to C{sub g} and typically varies from 0.15 for glasses with low C{sub g} such as amorphous silica to 0.38 for close-packed atomic networks such as in bulk metallic glasses. Pressure experiments were conducted up to 25 GPa at 293 K on silica, soda-lime-silica, chalcogenide, and bulk metallic glasses. We show from these high-pressure data that there is a direct correlation between {nu} and the maximum post-decompression density change.
