We study η_c production at center-of-mass energies √s from 4.18 to 4.60 GeV in e⁺e^– annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, corresponding to 7.3 fb^–1 of integrated luminosity. We measure the cross sections of the three different exclusive reactions e⁺e^– → η_cπ⁺π^–π⁰, e⁺e^– → η_cπ⁺π^–, and e⁺e^– → η_cπ⁰γ. We find significant η_c production in e⁺e^– → η_cπ⁺π^–π⁰ at √s of 4.23 GeV and 4.26 GeV and observe a significant energy-dependent Born cross section that we measure to be consistent with the production via the intermediate Y(4260) resonance. A search for the rare decay K_L → π⁰νν¯ was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to 2.2 × 10¹⁹ protons on target, a single event sensitivity of (1.30 ± 0.01_stat ± 0.14_syst) × 10^–9 was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of 3.0 × 10^–9 for the branching fraction of K_L → π⁰νν¯ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude.
