A case-control study, carried out in the Mount Gambier region of South Australia, investigated the relationship between mothers' antenatal drinking water source and malformations in offspring. It was prompted by earlier descriptive findings of a statistically significant, and localized, increase in the perinatal mortality rate in Mount Gambier, due principally to congential malformations affecting the central nervous system and multiple organ systems. Congenital hypothyroidism in infant following maternal I¹³¹ therapy

The case history is cited of an infant with congenital hypothyroidism whose mother had received 14.5 mC I¹³¹ as therapy for Graves' disease during the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. It was estimated that the fetal thyroid received around 250000 rad, contrasted with the usual estimated 10000 to 20000 rad for the thyroid of adults treated for hyperthyroidism. We report on two brothers and their two maternal uncles with severe mental retardation, congenital heart defect, cleft or highly arched palate, short stature and craniofacial anomalies consisting of microcephaly, abnormal ears, bulbous nose, broad nasal bridge, malar hypoplasia, and micro-gnathia. Exposure to radon progeny, tobacco use and lung cancer in a case-control study in Southern China

A case-control study of lung cancer in underground tin miners in southern China was conducted to examine the interplay between exposure to radon progeny and tobacco use. A total of 460 incident cases and 1,043 controls were evaluated. Among the exposed, mean radon progeny exposures were 600 and 427 working level months (WLM) for cases and controls, respectively.
