According to a limited number of SEM photomicrographs, the tensile strength increase of the filter mats and paper formulated with asbestos and L-134 fibers is caused by gradual attack on the fibers by the corrosive environment (moist air-HF-F/sub 2/) and buildup of fluoride salts on the fiber surfaces. These deposits cause cross-linkage or interfiber growth, which accounts for the increase in tensile strength. Longer exposures show evidence of the fibers becoming brittle. The brittle fibers would shear more easily and reduce the tensile strength.

Structural evaluations of the upper head of the EGCR pressure vessel were made. The configuration throughout the cluster region in the vessel was found to be structurally adequate. The primary and primary-plus-secondary stress intensities for the burst-slug detection and gas outlet nozzles were found to be within the allowable limits. This study demonstrates how site-specific labeling facilitates the interpretation and quantification of target components in complex {sup 13}C NMR spectra. {sup 13}C NMR spectroscopy along with {sup 13}C-labeling techniques has been used in a model study examining the thermal degradation of 1-phenyl-1-13C-hexane mixed with a thermally stable coal derived jet fuel at a concentration level of 1%. Kinetic data obtained at 400{degrees}C for the above mixture were compared to the kinetic data for the thermal degradation of 1-phenylhexane stressed by itself. An accurate prediction of the probability density function (PDF) of the mixture fraction is crucial to the prediction of combustion since mixing plays an important role in turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames. This work provides an assessment of the large-eddy simulation (LES)/filtered density function (FDF) method for the prediction of the PDF of the mixture fraction.
