Title: 5d and 6d SCFTs have no weak coupling limit

Abstract

We prove that there does not exist any weak coupling limit in the space of superconformal field theories in five and six dimensions, based on an analysis of the representation theory of the corresponding superconformal algebras. Holographically, this implies that superstring theories on AdS₆ and AdS₇ do not admit tensionless limits. Finally, we discuss the implications of our result on the existence of an action for coincident M5-branes.

We use holography to study codimension-2 surface defects in 5d SCFTs engineered by (p, q) 5-brane webs. The three-dimensional defects are realized by D3-branes ending on the brane web. We identify the holographic representation of the defects in Type IIB AdS₆ solutions as probe D3-branes, and study conformal and non-conformal defects which, respectively, preserve one half and one quarter of the supersymmetry. For a sample of 5d SCFTs, including the T_N theories, we provide explicit solutions for conformal and non-conformal defects. For the conformal defects we obtain their contribution to the free energy on S⁵.

Gravity duals of $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(0,\ 2\right) $$ SCFTs from M5-branes

We describe the general BPS system that governs the gravity duals of N=(0, 2) two-dimensional superconformal field theories in the low-energy limit of M5-branes on a four-manifold, M₄. In order to preserve supersymmetry, we restrict to cases where the four-manifold is embedded in a Calabi-Yau fourfold that is a sum of two line bundles over M₄. We further reduce the N=(0, 2) system to describe the gravity duals of SCFTs with N=(0,4) and N=(2,2) supersymmetry. Rotating black hole entropy from M5-branes

We compute the superconformal index of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories obtained from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold. Exploiting the 3d-3d correspondence, we use perturbative invariants of SL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory to determine the superconformal index in the large N limit, including corrections logarithmic in N. The leading order partition function provides a microscopic foundation for the entropy function of the dual rotating asymptotically AdS₄ black holes. We also verify that the supergravity one-loop contribution to the log N term coincides with the field theoretic result. Flowing to higher dimensions: a new strongly-coupled phase on M2 branes

We describe a one-parameter family of new holographic RG flows that start from AdS ₄ × S⁷ and go to AdS₅ˆ×B6, where B6 is conformal to a Kahler manifold and AdS₅ˆ is Poincaré AdS₅ with one spatial direction compactified and fibered over B6. The new solutions “flow up dimensions,” going from the (2 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theory on M2 branes in the UV to a (3 + 1)-dimensional field theory on intersecting M5 branes in the infra-red.
